In the annals of Indian history, few women stand as tall as Rajmata Jijabai, affectionately known as Jijau Aai Saheb. More than just the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, she was a visionary, a spiritual guide, and a formidable force who laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire long before the first sword was drawn.
Early Life and Background
Jijabai was born in 1598 into the noble Jadhav family of Sindkhed Raja, which served under the Nizamshahi Sultanate. Her father, Lakhuji Jadhav, was a respected Maratha noble. From an early age, Jijabai was instilled with a strong sense of dharma, patriotism, and righteousness. She married Shahaji Bhonsle, a skilled general, and together they became parents to Shivaji in 1630 at Shivneri Fort.
Mother, Mentor, and Nation-Builder
Jijabai’s greatest contribution to Indian history was her role as mentor and moral compass to Shivaji Maharaj. While Shahaji was often away on military campaigns, Jijabai single-handedly raised Shivaji and took charge of his education—imparting not only knowledge but also instilling the values of Swarajya (self-rule), justice, bravery, and devotion to dharma.
Through bedtime stories of Rama, Krishna, and great Hindu kings, she inspired in Shivaji the dream of a free and just kingdom. Her teachings laid the ethical and spiritual framework for the future Maratha Empire.
A Woman of Steel
Jijabai was not just a spiritual guide—she was a practical leader. She oversaw the administration of Pune during Shivaji’s youth, managing estates, organizing revenue, and guiding military preparations. Her leadership in rebuilding temples and promoting local governance demonstrated her capabilities as a ruler in her own right.
Even in times of great loss and pressure, such as the deaths of her husband and relatives, Jijabai remained unshaken—a pillar of strength for the Marathas and a source of courage for Shivaji Maharaj.
Legacy
Jijabai passed away in 1674, shortly after witnessing her son’s coronation as Chhatrapati, the ruler of the sovereign Maratha kingdom—a moment she had dreamed of and worked toward her entire life.
Today, she is remembered not just as a mother but as a nation-builder, whose foresight, resilience, and values gave birth to a legacy that changed the course of Indian history.
