History remembers kings for their victories, empires, and achievements. But Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the brave son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is remembered for something far greater—his unshakable loyalty to Swarajya and his supreme sacrifice in the face of brutal torture and tyranny.
👑 The Crown Prince of Courage
Born on 14 May 1657, Sambhaji Maharaj was the eldest son of Shivaji Maharaj and Maharani Saibai. A gifted warrior and scholar fluent in Sanskrit, Persian, and Marathi, Sambhaji was trained in politics, administration, and warfare from a young age. After the death of his father in 1680, he ascended the throne of the Maratha Empire amidst political turbulence and external threats.
Despite facing betrayals, Mughal invasions, and internal divisions, Sambhaji Maharaj fought relentlessly to preserve the Maratha Swarajya, just as his father had envisioned.
⚔️ A Warrior Against Aurangzeb
Sambhaji’s reign coincided with the fierce ambitions of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who had personally moved to the Deccan to crush the Maratha Empire. Sambhaji led guerrilla warfare, surprise attacks, and brilliant defenses against a much larger Mughal army. Under his command, the Marathas fiercely resisted Mughal expansion, frustrating Aurangzeb for years.
But the battle was not just political—it was ideological. Sambhaji stood as a defender of Dharma, Swarajya, and cultural pride against forced conversions and tyranny.
🛡️ Betrayal and Capture
In 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was betrayed by his own relatives and captured by Mughal forces at Sangameshwar. Despite offers from Aurangzeb to convert to Islam in exchange for his life, Sambhaji refused without hesitation. He chose death over dishonor.
💔 The Martyrdom
For 40 days, Sambhaji Maharaj was subjected to inhuman torture. Yet, he did not bow, did not convert, and did not betray his people or his Dharma. Finally, he was brutally executed at Tulapur at the age of 31.
His last words are believed to be:
"I will die as a Hindu, I will never accept slavery!"
This fearless sacrifice shocked the Mughals and inspired generations of Marathas to rise and continue the fight for Swarajya.

Though his reign was short, Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifice lit a fire that could not be extinguished. His courage gave strength to his people. Within a few decades, the Maratha Empire struck back harder and emerged as the dominant power in India.
Today, Sambhaji Maharaj is remembered as Dharamveer, the king who chose martyrdom over compromise.
